A cataract is a cloudy area that forms in the lens of the eye, causing blurred vision and glare around lights. Age-related cataracts are the most common type. Cataract surgery involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with an artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL) to restore clear vision.

The lens are made of clear and flexible protein called crystalline. As people age the proteins began breaking down which forms a cloudy patch that will affect the vision.

Types of cataracts

Age-related Cataracts: The most common type, typically developing as people age. They can be further divided into:

  • Nuclear Cataracts: They develop in the middle of the lens and are linked to aging, which results in alterations in color perception and blurred vision..
  • Cortical Cataracts: Develop in the outer part of the lens, leading to issues with glare and contrast, often affecting peripheral vision.
  • Posterior Subcapsular Cataracts: Form at the back of the lens, affecting reading vision and causing glare, often developing more quickly than other types.

The eyecare provider also classifies age related cataracts into further by where the cataracts are formed.

  • Nuclear sclerotic cataract: It is the type of cataract which forms in the nucleus
  • Cortical cataract: This cataract forms in the cortex.
  • Posterior subcapsular cataract: This is another type of age-related cataract that happens in the posterior cortex.  Posterior refers to the back of your lens and it is a part closest to retina. Subcapsular cataract means the cataract that formed in the outer edge of the corted beneath the lens capsule

Congenital Cataracts: Present at birth or developing in early childhood, these cataracts can result from genetic factors, maternal infections during pregnancy, or metabolic disorders.

Secondary Cataracts: Develop as a result of other medical conditions or treatments, such as diabetes, prolonged use of corticosteroids, or after eye surgeries like glaucoma treatment.

Traumatic Cataracts: Result from an eye injury or trauma, which can cause the lens to become cloudy.

Radiation Cataracts: Caused by exposure to radiation, such as during certain medical treatments or accidents.

What causes cataracts?

Main causes of cataracts are degradation of protein in the lens of the eyes.

There are certain factors like genetic and environmental risk factors which can cause the condition of cataract in the eyes.

Environmental risk factor

There are toxic substance that can get ingested in your body it can react with the protein molecules in the body. They are harmful because most of the environmental factors results in increase of free radicals in the body. Free radicals are unstable molecules which will react with healthy cells in the body.

Environmental risk factors include:

  • Air pollution.
  • Tobacco smoke.
  • Industrial chemicals.
  • Long-term exposure to UV light from the sun.
  • History of radiation therapy to the upper part of your body.

Limiting environmental exposure can reduce the cataract formation.

Medical risk factors

Medical risk factors can that raise your risk for cataracts include:

  • Having diabetes or high blood sugar: High blood sugar levels can cause the lens of the eye to swell and change shape, leading to cloudiness. Over time, this process increases the likelihood of developing cataracts.
  • Having certain eye surgeries, like glaucoma: Eye surgeries, such as those for glaucoma, can alter the structure and function of the eye, making cataract formation more likely. These changes can affect the way the lens absorbs and processes light.
  • Using corticosteroids to treat some medical conditions: Corticosteroids can accelerate the formation of cataracts by disrupting the proteins in the lens. Long-term use of these medications can lead to an increased risk of clouding in the lens.
  • Having certain eye diseases, like retinitis pigmentosa or uveitis: Eye diseases can cause inflammation or degeneration of the lens, which may lead to cataract formation. Conditions like retinitis pigmentosa can also alter the overall health of the eye, increasing susceptibility to cataracts.

Genetic Risk factors

The family history of cataracts can result in the development of cataract in a person. Some of the cataracts are formed by genital mutation at the time of birth and its called congenital cataract.
